چکیده

Information was gathered on'the incidence of hippoboscid louse-flies (Diptera, Hippoboscidae) on passerine birds in interior Alaska during 1987. Other authors have discussed louse-fly infestations in birds, but always in areas with less severe climatic conditions. The hippoboscid species found (Omithomya bequaertl} was described by Maa (1969) as a new species, and few data are available on abundance, hosts, or distribution. A total of 429 birds of 28 species was examined for louseflies. This paper documents 10 avian hosts, from five families; eight of those hosts are newly described. Adult louse-flies were found during a 70day period from 23 June through 29 August 1987.

Insect ectoparasites from wild passerine birds in the Czech Republic.

Wild passerine birds (Passeriformes) from northeastern part of the Czech Republic were examined for ectoparasites. Three species of louse-flies of the genus Ornithomya (Diptera: Hippoboscidae), two species of fleas of the genera Ceratophyllus and Dasypsyllus (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae), and 15 species of chewing lice belonging to the genera Myrsidea, Menacanthus (Phthiraptera: Menoponidae),...

The Hippoboscidae (Insecta: Diptera) from Madagascar, with new records from the “Parc National de Midongy Befotaka”

The Hippoboscidae or "louse-flies" is a family of pupiparous Diptera, which in their adult stage are ectoparasites of mammals and birds. This paper presents a comprehensive review of Malagasy Hippoboscidae. In total, amongst the 213 species of this family known worldwide, 14 have been reported in Madagascar, among which six are considered as endemic to the Malagasy region. In addition, data are...

Arsenophonus and Sodalis replacements shape evolution of symbiosis in louse flies

Symbiotic interactions between insects and bacteria are ubiquitous and form a continuum from loose facultative symbiosis to greatly intimate and stable obligate symbiosis. In blood-sucking insects living exclusively on vertebrate blood, obligate endosymbionts are essential for hosts and hypothesized to supplement B-vitamins and cofactors missing from their blood diet. The role and distribution ...

Sources of variability in aggregation and sex ratios of Crataerina melbae (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) among adult colonial alpine swifts.

Aggregation of Crataerina melbae flies on breeding adult alpine swifts (Apus melba) was low when compared with other host-parasite systems and varied with sampling date, year, and sex of the flies. Generalized linear models were performed to ascertain which factors, extrinsic and/or intrinsic to the host, explained variability in the number of louse flies present on a single host, i.e., abundan...

West Nile Virus Outbreak in North American Owls, Ontario, 2002

From July to September 2002, an outbreak of West Nile virus (WNV) caused a high number of deaths in captive owls at the Owl Foundation, Vineland, Ontario, Canada. Peak death rates occurred in mid-August, and the epidemiologic curve resembled that of corvids in the surrounding Niagara region. The outbreak occurred in the midst of a louse fly (Icosta americana, family Hippoboscidae) infestation. ...
